LITTLE OWL
Little Owl

In 1950´s was the little owl one of the most abundant owl species. Today there are only 250 – 500 couples in the whole Czech Republic. Decline is caused by rodent’s poisons using, attics and spiracles closing, old trees with cavities grubbing, increasing populations of stone martens, which are their predators, danger as car transport etc. Little owls are strictly adhered with habitat. If their partner will perish, they often don’t find other.
How Zoo Brno helps?
- We are participating in Little owls populations monitoring in South Moravia (especially financially).
- We are cooperating with Czech Union for Nature Conservation Břeclav – this Union is dealing with Little owls populations supporting (e.g. special boxes for nesting, public education and others activities).
- We are breeding the Little owls in Zoo Brno as a part of the Rescue Station for Handiccaped Animals.
